It is well known that the subthreshold stimulus causes to elevate the excitability of the nerve. The authors studied the temporal course of the change of excitability, utilizing condenser discharge as the condition stimulus. It was elucidated in this experiment that the change of the excitability, which was named by Lucas as "local excitatory state", developes rapidly and reaches its crest, and then gradual decay succeeds. If the small time constant is chosen for the condition stimulus, i.e., 0.13 msec, duration of the change of excitability ends within 4 msec. But when the time constant is large, i.e., 2.6 msec, the duration is prolonged more than 10 msec. Initial strength of the condenser discharge also effects upon the excitability curve. When the initial strength is lower than 55% of the threshold, the descending part of the excitability curve shows exponential decrease, but in case of higher stimulus than 55%, the curves deviate from the exponential decay. Exponential decay of the excitability curve can be understand as that the process of nerve evoked by weak subthreshold stimulus is simple and passive. And the authors conclude from the temporal course of excitability curve that when the strong subthreshold stimulus is applied, there occurs some active exciting process in the nerve.
