Dasson elegans is a Japanese representative of the tropical blennioid fishes which have been known to be ovoviviparous as a rule. But, after the dissection of many mature females of D. elegans, I am convinced that this species is not ovoviviparous but oviparous. In the male, the urogenital sinus opens at the tip of a conical process behind the anus (Fig. 1, A). In the female, however, the urogenital sinus is provided with a thick covering on its ventral side, and there is a tiny pointed or round papilla on the dorsal side of the opening, situated between the paired soft swel lin-gs which extend to the proximal part of the anteriormost flexible spine of the analdfin (fig. 1, B). In the mature individuals of both sexes, the dark cross bars on the sibe of head frequently become obscure. In the mature male, the nape is inflated upwards and sometimes makes a distinct upheaval in front of the dorsal fin, the dusky band along the white edge of the anterior part of analfin becomes black, and sometimes the dorsal fin becomes very high (Fig. 2).
