In this paper, author reports the results of his experiment on the alteration of blood lactic acid after the severe exercise in the carrier pigeon. The birds used were 15 carrier pigeons under training and 14 carrier pigeons untrained or trained at one time but ceased from training long time before the experiment. Blood samples drawn from the wing vein were used for the lactic acid determination employing MEYERHOF's method. The exercise was severe one, described in the preceding paper by the author. The results were as follows: 1. Carrier pigeons in rest. The average contents of blood lactic acid determined in April were 22.4mg% in the trained birds and 20.2mg% in the untrained ones, while in August 29.1mg% in the former and 26.0mg% in the latter. 2. Immediately after the exercise, the blood lactic acid was more increased in the atained birds than in the untraind ones. After 5 minites, the blood lactic acid had already begun to decrease in both of them. However, the removal of lactic acid was rather retarded in the trained birds than in the untrained ones. This might be due to the fact that the former worked more severely in this limitted time than the later, and therefore the highest lactic acid value was more delayed in the former than in the latter. After 15 minutes, about two thirds of excess lactic acid were removed and the speed of removal appeared to be conspicuously higher in the trained birds than in the untrained ones. After 30 minutes, the main part of excess lactic acid was removed both in the trained birds and in the untrained ones. 3. The speed lactic acid removal appeared to be considerably influenced by the atmospheric temperature; as the temperature raised the speed of removal lowered significantly. 4. There might be positive correlation between the blood lactic acid in rest and its increase after the exercise, but sufficient data were not available.
