As part of attempts to study the effects of muscular exercise on the nature of pigeon's blood the author studied the pH_s of the venous blood in rest and after a bout of exercise in the carrier pigeon. The blood samples drawn from the wing vein without CO_2 loss were oxalated and centrifuged. The serums diluted with 0.85 per cent NaCl solution were used for the pH determinations employing the hydrogen gas electrode method. The exercises were consisted of two forms of flying: 1) the moderate exercise, which means flying freely in the sky for about 40 minutes, and 2) the severe exercise, which means almost exhaustive flying forced artificially in the room by binding the leg for about 5 minutes. The birds used for the study of moderate exercise were 14 carrier pigeons under training, while those for severe exercise were 14 carrier pigeons untrained or trained at one time and ceased in training long times before the experiment. The blood samples were drawn as fast as possible after the exercise. The results were as follows:-(1) The average pH_s value of the venous blood of carrier pigeons in rest was 7.40 and there was no significant difference between the average pH_s value of trained carrier pigeons and that of untrained ones. (2) The alterations in the pH_s value of the venous blood of carrier pigeons after the moderate exercise, though actually important, were never significant. The average pH_s value of the venous blood of carrier pigeons after the moderate exercise was 7.32. This means perhaps that the bird was taking exercise in a 'steady state' (after HILL) of bodily condition. (3) After the severe exercise there were very conspicuous alterations in the pH_s value of the venous blood of the carrier pigeon. In this case, the average pH_s value of the venous blood of the birds was 7.08, and there were considerable varations among the alterations in the pH_s value of the venous blood of each individuals. The latter might be due to the fact that there were considerable differences among individuals in the physiological resistance to such an exhaustive muscular exercise. From these results the author concluded that the carrier pigeon might be flying in the sky with adequate rationality. This work was done under the direction of Prof. M. TANGE.
