The multipolar spiodles were abundantly observed in the follicle cells of the testis of Diestrammena japonica karny (Orthoptera). The separation of the chromosomes proceeds rather regularly in the multipolar spindle, but the division of the cytosome is suppressed, this giving rise to various kinds of multi-nucleated cells containing duplicated chromosomes. The numbers of the chromosomes contained in these cells are approximately 245, 230, 193, 169, 139, 112 and 56, the haploid number, 29, being also found (Table 1). It is noticeable that there is a remarkable correlation between the number of the chromosomes and that of the spindle poles; that is, the bipolar division occurs in the haploid cells, the tetrapolar division in the diploid cells, the hexapolar division in the tetraploid cells, and so on. It is deduced that the haploid number of chromosomes is due to the pseudoreduction as the result of the close association of the homologons chromosomes. No corresponding feature could be verified in the observation of the ovarian follicle cells of female.
