The period of molting in the pigeon continues from middle April to early December. The female pigeon lays eggs at any season of the year, but more frequently in spring and autumn. The chickens are out after 17-20 days of incubation. Thereafter the male parent feeds the young for about 40 days and the female for about 30 days. When the female of a pair of pigeons lays eggs in the course of molting, both the male and the female stop the molting at about 12 days after that. The interruption of the molting lasts until about 29 days after the hatching of the young in the male parent and about 22 days in the female. Thus the periods of interruption are shorter by 11 days in the male and by 8 days in the female than the period of feeding chickens. The fact that the period is longer in the male pigeon that takes care of the young for longer time than the female parent suggests that the internal factors controlling the feeding behavior of the pigeons play a part in the interruption of molting during the feeding period.
