The group formation behaviour of the silkworm occurs mainly through contact with another individual. Thoracic legs were observed to be an important sense organ in this behavior. The present paper deals with the effect of fifferent stimulants such as a needle, a piece of wood, and a mulberry stem, as well as a silkworm itself, on the response of thoracic legs. Stimulation by a needle induced an evasive response in all thoracic legs, while a sharpened mulberry stem brought about the response of retracting the thoracic legs except for the third one. Mulberry leaves were observed to stimulate similar to mulberry stems. However, a piece of wood was not effective. If the mouth of worm was pasted, shut, the same response was observed. The movement activity decreased by making cuts in the thoracic legs. The highest reduction of movement activity was observed in a silkworm whose first leg was cut, a medium reduction in an animal whose second leg was cut, and the lowest reduction in an animal whose third leg was severed. Silkworms receiving application of paste on all thoracic legs and segments were neither able to move forward nor able to form cocoons. These worms could only move in a straight retreat. Therefore, it is highly probable that the thoracic legs play an important role in idenification and movement as well as in the uptake ofood.
