Transmission electron micrographs of wing scales of Pieris rapae crucivora have been given by Yagi (1954 and 1955). He has noticed the difference between males and females in the form of pigment granules which are packed in each grating of longitudinal ridges and transverse partitions. Optical properties of the wing of Pieris rapae crucivora have been found to be different between males and females, and to play an important role in their sexual behavior (Obara and Hidaka, 1968). In hope of giving ultrastructural basis to the optical difference between sexes, the present authors observed the scales of Pieris rapae crucivora under a scanning electron microscope. Elongated ellipsoid particles (5, 000Å long and 2, 000Å thick) were packed in the gratings or studded on the frames of the gratings, with their long axes perpendicular to the surface of the scale. The round particles which have been observed in male scales by a transmission electron microscope could be longitudinal profiles of those elongated ellipsoid particles. We could not find any spiny crystals such as Yagi described in females. Instead, there were some elongated ellipsoid particles lying horizontally. The number of the elongated ellipsoid particles was greatest in the scales from upper surface of the male wing. It became smaller in the order, scales from male under surface, female under surface and female upper surface. This order is quite the reverse of that of wings' capability reflecting near ultraviolet rays (3, 800-4, 000Å in wave length) (Obara, 1970). This may be well interpreted if we assume that the elongated ellipsoid particles in the gratings of the scales have a property to absorb near ultraviolet rays in those range of wave length.
