The genetic basis of the difference in reproductive traits of the long-armed prawn Macrobrachium nipponense (de Haan) between the brackish and upper freshwater populations within the same water system was investigated in the laboratory. Their distinct egg sizes were independent of salinity in parental growing media, though the prawns collected from the upper fresh waters failed to reproduce in the experimental brackish water (10 ‰ S). Between the two populations, furthermore, the survival and developmental responses of newly hatched larvae to extremes in salinity (0‰ and 30.5‰ S) differed contrastively. These facts are considered to indicate a genetic distance between them.
