The egg and clutch sizes of the prawn Macrobrachium nipponense were compared among local populations distributed from the estuary to the upper waters of a rivei. The prawns were divided into two groups according to the discontinuous differences in their reproductive characters: the estuarine group spawns a great number of small eggs and the upper freshwater group spawns a small number of large eggs. The reproductive effort per spawning expressed as the relative amount of egg matter to body weight was greater in the estuarine group. The berried females were smaller in the upper waters, but egg size had no correlation to body size in each group. The significance of the difference in the reproductive characteristics between the two groups in discussed in regard to the difference in the environmental conditions of the habitat.
