Cell surface changes during the differentiation of micromeres and mesomeres isolated at the 16-cell stage of sea urchin embryos of Strongylocentrotus intermedius were examined as to concanavalin A (Con A)-mediated cell agglutinability. Among the observed stages from early blastula-1 to the prism larva, the agglutinability was highest at the early blastula-1 stage and decreased at a later stage in both micromere- and mesomere-derived cells. In the mesomere-derived cells, the agglutinability was maintained at a rather constant rate after the early blastula-2 stage. In the micromere-derived cells, the agglutinability decreased until the midmesenchyme blastula stage, and at the beginning stage of gastrulation, the variance of the agglutinability became larger than that of the previous stages.
