Effects of"Gender" of Computer-Generated Speech on Credibility Perception

The present study examines how the "gender" of computer-generated speech affects the user's perception of credibility of information. In particular, the experiment tested the interaction between the gender of computer speech and the gender marking of the description. The results showed that when the gender of TTS voice matched the gender of product, credibility of the product description increased. Likewise, credibility was greater when the voice gender matched that of the user. These results were consistent with the Computers Are Social Actors (CASA) paradigm. Despite the fact that Unnatural characteristics of pronunciation and prosody clearly mark TTS to be non-human, individuals seem to apply social rules associated with the gender assignment.
