An extended desktop multimedia conference system has been developed for international cooperative work by sharing CAD and image data among multi-point users. Its wide area networking system utilizes the characteristics of global Internet as best-effort service and ISDN as high-speed guaranteed service. The CAD data files stored in SQL database are converted by HTTP protocol in the local area network and compressed by multi-tone adaptive entropy coding technology in the wide area network transmission. The examples of short time CAD data transfer and realtime multimedia conferencing confirm that practical and efficient wide area collaboration engineering environments can be achieved.
