A new stereo echo canceler providing a unique and strict identification of the true echo path impulse response is proposed. A switching circuit, introduced in one of the two channels, connects alternately the loudspeaker directly to the input terminal or via a delay element. Because of this new processing, the number of independent equations derived from the condition of echo cancellation is sufficient. The filter coefficients after convergence are the unique solution to these equations. Consequently, the use of an adaptive algorithm to minimize the residual echo causes the filter coefficients to converge to the true echo path impulse response. Simulation results show that the distance between coefficients of the true echo path impulse response and the adaptive filter coefficients converges to -19dB in the channel where the switching circuit is located. In the other channel, the distance converges to -40dB, which corresponds to the level of tlhe white Gaussian noise at the output of the microphone.
