In the paper, we present a mobile satellite internet access (MSIA) system and a mobile broadband satellite access system, called as MoBISAT (Mobile Broadband Interactive Satellite Multimedia Access Technology), which are developed by ETRI. The MSIA provides internet service, broadcasting, and digital A/V service in not only fixed but also mobile environment using Ku-band geostationary earth orbit satellite. A Ku band two-way active phased array antenna installed on the top of the transportation vehicles will enable the transmission of the signals to satellite as well as signal tracking and reception. The forward link is a high speed TDM transmission media, which carries signaling and user traffic. The return link is a transmission media, which carries signaling and user traffic. The MoBISAT, which is a next generation mobile broadband satellite access system development project, provides both Ku-band satellite TV and Ka-band high-speed Internet to the passengers and crews for land, maritime, and aeronautical vehicles. This paper describes the main technological solutions adopted for the implementation and results for the MSIA system and the main design features of the MoBiSAT system.
