An active Power Factor Correction (PFC) ac-dc converter, whose output voltage is controlled by common average current mode control, constant-frequency PWM, is operated in continuous conduction mode. Nonlinear characteristics of converter circuits bring about unusual instabilities. Two major types have been reported, period-doubling bifurcation and chaos. Their characteristics and consequences are examined, including a period-doubling route to chaos. There is good agreement between simulation and experiment. The criteria are found which imply the existence of period-doubling and chaos in the PFC converters
