A new fast-response DC-DC converter design is presented that will meet the requirements and features of the new generation of microprocessors and digital systems. The proposed fast-response inductor-switching topology is modified by the basic buck topology by replacing the output inductor with coupled inductor (primary inductance >>secondary inductance), a capacitor and the two switches. At step-up load transient, the secondary inductor with small inductance of the coupled inductor becomes the active part and increases the speed of current flow (di/dt) and reduces the voltage drop. The additional capacitor, which is parallel-connected to the coupled inductor, will suppress the overshoot during the step-down transition. Furthermore, the proposed topologies with three different coupling methods of the coupled inductor are examined. The design and simulation of the proposed topologies are verified by experimentally.
