"The Bronze Horseman" was completed by Pushkin in Boldino in the autumn of 1833. The central incident of this poem is the flood which struck St. Petersburg in November of 1824. In the present paper it will be shown that Pushkin associated the flood of "The Bronze Horseman" with the rebellions of the 1770's and 1830's. In "The Bronze Horseman" three figures related to beasts play an important role: the flood, Evgeny, and a marble lion. The raging flood is metaphorically likened to a beast. The life of mad Evgeny is akin to an animal's life and at the time of his act of defiance he seems to metamorphose into a beast. Of course, a marble lion is the image of a beast. A study of the word "beast" used in Pushkin's works and letters makes it clear that he connects that term with madness, rebellion, and epidemics. This association was fixed in his mind in 1830-31 when Cholera Rebellions broke out in various parts of Russia. In the autumn of 1830 an outbreak of cholera confined Pushkin to his estate in Boldino. If we read his letters of that time, substituting "flood" for references to cholera and rebellions, we can easily see the autobiographical elements in the scene where Evgeny sits astride the marble lion. In Russian history the 1830's and 1770's bear several resemblances. In the 1770's the plague was prevalent, and the Pugachev Rebellion and the flood of St. Petersburg occurred. Pushkin, as the author of the "History of the Pugachev Rebellion", was well aware of these matters. My analysis shows that Pushkin connected the flood of "The Bronze Horseman" with the political disruptions of those periods.
