In the inner side of Southwest Japan, especially in Chugoku Mountain Ridges, there are many widely distributed intermediate to acid volcanic masses intruded by late Cretaceous to early Palaeogene intrusive rocks. The Tsugurosen volcanic rocks, one of these masses, have been studied stratigraphically and petrographically. They are mainly composed of andesite to rhyolite pyroclastic flow deposits and are over 2000 meters in maximum thickness. The volcanic rocks were unconformably deposited mainly on a depression of the Sangun metamorphic rocks. Moreover, volcanic activity is divided into three stages according to two intercalations of lacustrine deposits, which indicate erosion and the pause of volcanism. These volcanic rocks are highly metamorphosed by late Cretaceous to early Palaeogene intrusive rocks.
