The Neogene folds in the Province of northern Shinshu, the northern part of the Fossa Magna region, central Japan, are divided into two kinds of fundamental units, namely the primary and secondary fold. The former includes the first to the third class of fold, and the latter the fourth to the sixth fold, which are classified in the order of their axial lengths of folds (Fig. 1). The secondary folds are mostly of intrafolial nature and are interpreted by the mechanism of internal buckling, gravity gliding or "drag" within the strata. For the primary fold, however, a single model of buckling or bending cannot elucidate its morphological characteristics as a whole, such as a series of synclines with gentle closures and sharp anticlines with steep dip or overturned limbs, especially their asymmetrical fold style mostly with axial surfaces dipping to the west or northwest (Fig. 2). In this case, therefore, it can be comprehended that each model is effective within its own applicable range. A unified model for interpretation of the whole aspect of this status is proposed here, namely a model composed of tilting blocks of basement rocks bounded by cylindrical faults (Fig. 4), by which the essential characters of folds in the overlying Tertiary strata may be explained. This model is mechanically equivalent to the combination of bending and buckling mechanisms. A problem on the origin of the fundamental tectonic field of stress as a cause of the blocking and tilting of basement is left for the future study.
