• A statistical survey was conducted on a total of 49720 pupils from 6 to 14 years of age, residing in Fukuoka Prefecture and being composed of 13518 males and 12505 females of urban, and 12187 males and 11510 females of suburban districts, and comparison was made between two district groups of population with regard to the developmental phase in body height and weight. The data thus obtained were also compared with those from the corresponding subject groups in the corresponding districts in Fukuoka Prefecture as obtained in 1948. The results were as follows. 1) For the year 1959 A Comparison of body height between sexes Urban district : male > female Suburban district : male ≥ female Comparison between the district groups Male : urban ≧ suburban Female : urban < suburban B Comparison of body weight between sexes Urban : male < female Suburban : male < female Comparison between the district groups Both sexes : urban > suburban 2) Comparison between 1959 and 1948 A Body height Urban as well as suburban district groups of both sexes excelled in 1959 than in 1948 B Body weight Urban as well as suburban district groups of both sexes excelled in 1959 than in 1948. Body height in 1959 of all the subject groups excelled considerably that in 1949 with the mean increment of respectively 1.1 to 2.6cm in six years of age, 3.0 to 8.1cm in 7 to 10 years of age and 6.3 to 20.9 cm in 11 to 14 years of age of the subjects. The increase was especially noted in the middle school pupils. In the body weight of all the subject examined, the average figures for the year 1959 excelled those for the year 1948 by respectively 0.3 to 0.6 kg in 6 years of age, 1.6 to 3.4 kg in 7 to 10 years of age and 2.1 to 14.7 kg in 11 to 14 years of age of the subjects regardless of sexes and districts concerned. 3) The marked increase in the body height and weight of the sudjects in the year of 1959 may be accounted for by the increased supply of staple food with accompanying improvement of nutritional status of these people as compared to the postwar condition and also by encouragement of sports for these people. More maked acceleration in the develoment of female physique as compared to male may also be accounted for by masculinization of sports for the female, elimination of feminine inferiority complexes and by improvement of female clothing and school ration as attained in these days.
