A survey was conducted on 2837 male and 2706 female subjects, aged 6 to 14 years and residing in urban, suburban and rural communities in Saga Prefecture in an aim to see the possible relationship existing between the subject's occupation and his tooth caries experience. The numbers of def teeth, DMF teeth and DMF index were respectively examined on each subject and comparison of the caries incidence between different occupational groups was made on the basis of the mean ratios of differences. The results have shown that tooth caries was most prevalent in the agricultural population, followed by trading and salaried people almost at the same level of incidence between them, and tooth caries was least prevalent in the mine population. Although there were indications pointing to the close relationship existing between tooth caries and the subject's occupation, it has been also noticed that the disease was greatly dependent on the individual's mode of food intake, or to say more particularly, on the amount of sugar consumed by him.
