A recommendation on the security concentrations of various dusts in work environments was made by American Conference of Govermental Industrial Hygienists in 1980 and also a similar recommendation by Japanese Society for Industrial Hygiene in 1981. Among these dusts the present author has been interested especially in those found in the dental field. To determine the particle size distribution and the rate of respirable dust to the total in this field was the object of this investigation. The following results were obtained. 1) Inlet of Andersen sampler was improved by the author to accommodate the above recommendation. For the polished dust of various dental materials collected by this sampler, the particle size distribution was examined. The results suggested that, in spite of the improvement, there was no necessity to pay attention when the diameter of dusts was in or under the neighbourhood of 10 μm. 2) When the particle size distributions were biased to the range of a small diameter, respirable dust rate obtained by the previous sampler was estimated to be equivalent to the usual value with 5-10% added. 3) As far as the results were considered from the combination of materials and instruments, the volume of the dust generating per unit time was most important concerning the respirable dust rate. 4) It was recognized by scanning electron microscopy that the shape of the dust particle was essentially determined by its physical properties and not by instruments or managements performed.
