It is essential for dentists to know the anatomy of the floor of the maxillary sinus, especially while the maxillary teeth are being treated. In this study, the analysis of the morphology of the floor of the maxillary sinus and the relations between the maxillary teeth and the maxillary sinus are studied radiographically. Panoramic radiographs showing no pathologic condition on the maxillary sinus are used for this study. The subjects for this study consists of 150 males (300 maxillary sinuses), aged 23 to 25, and 120 females (240 maxillary sinuses), aged 20 to 25. The results obtained are as follows : 1. The morphology of the floor of the maxillary sinus in panoramic radiographs was divided into eight forms. The morphology of the floor of the maxillary sinus in males frequently showed an angular form (28%), and the angular form was more frequently detected in the left side (40%). The floor of the maxillary sinus showing a circular form (28%) or a downward-convex form (22%) was predominantly detected in females. 2. The floor of the maxillary sinus did not always show a bilaterally symmetrical morphology. Only 31% of males' and 42% of females' floors showed a bilaterally symmetrical morphology. In the bilaterally symmetrical morphology of the floor of the maxillary sinus, an angular form was predominantly seen in males and a circular form was predominantly seen in females. 3. The septum in the floor of the maxillary sinus was detected in 14% of males and 11% of females. Most of the septum was located in the molar or premolar region of the floor of the maxillary sinus. There was the tendency that the septum was slightly more seen in the right maxillary sinus than in the left side. 4. The convexity of the floor of the maxillary sinus in the alveolar bone was located more frequently on the mesial or distal portion of the maxillary first molar. 5. The root apices of the first and second maxillary molars in males were more frequently superimposed on the floor of the maxillary sinus than the other teeth. The superimposition of the root apex to the maxillary sinus in males was predominantly seen in an upward and downward-convex form of the floor (76%). The root apices of the first maxillary molar in females were more frequently superimposed on the floor of the maxillary sinus than the other teeth. The superimposition of the root apex to the maxillary sinus in females was predominantly seen in a notched-angular form of the floor (60%). Less was the superimposition of the tooth apex to the maxillary sinus seen in a circular form of males' and females' floors.
