Mechanical loading increases bone mass and strength, however, performing a number of loading at once has little additional effect because continual loading may diminish the mechanosensitivity of bone to loading. Thus, one might expect a greater osteogenic response following two loadings separated by an interval, due to the potential recovery of sensitivity to loading in between. The present study was designed to investigate the influence of varying intervals between loading on the osteogenic response to high-impact jump exercise. Sixty female Wistar rats, aged 10 weeks, were divided into one sedentary group and five exercise groups. Each jump exercise set consisted of 2 sessions separated by intervals of 0, 4, 8, 12 and 24 hours, and was completed in every three days. Each session consisted of 10 jumps. The experiment ran for 30 days (10 sets) in total. After 10 sets, bone mass and strength of the tibia were significantly greater in the five exercise groups, than among the sedentary group. However, significant differences among the exercise groups were not observed. These results demonstrate that an interval of 24 hours between two sessions of high-impact loading had no more effect on the osteogenic response than intervals of 0, 4, 8 or 12 hours duration. These results suggest little to no recovery of mechanosensitivity within 24 hours of jump exercise.
