A microcomputer-controlled system for degassing liquid samples in NMR or ESR pretreatment has been assembled. The "cool and thaw" (C & T) method, usually carried out for degassing, is required of chemist's handworks, and may be controlled on a microcomputer. The system is composed of a C & T device (a liquid nitrogen Dewar elevator, a vacuum line, a heater, and a sensor for temperature), a 4-bit microcomputer, and an interface circuitry. The procedures of cooling, evacuation, and thawing are cycled until the pressure does not rise when the sample tube is immersed in liquid nitrogen. During the procedure, the system is protected from ill operation, by monitoring the level of liquid nitrogen and by checking the emergent rise of pressure. About 240 words of machine code are used for programming. The most important point is the accordance of timing between the operation of microcomputer and the mechanical motions of the C & T device. This has been achieved by putting the delaying time buffer every time when the C & T device moves. In order to eliminate another obstacles, such as electrical noise and chattering, the relays and the switches have been installed apart from the interface circuitry, so as to be electro-magnetically shielded. Although the interfacing devices should be critically designed, a microcomputer can perform an automatic degassing processing, and is demonstrated to be served for labor-saving and constant operation of pretreatment.
