The effect of calcium salts on the rate of either germination or tube elongation of pollen was examined by incubating pollens on a M/30 phosphate-bufferized sucrose (10%)-agar (1%) medium without or with various kinds of calcium salts in the concentration of M/500. Their effect on both germination and tube elongation was considerably different from one another among calcium salts used ; either accelerating or inhibitng in various degrees and this irregularity was not parallel even between germination and tube elongation. These results suggested that both germination and tube elongation were effected rather by anionic moieties of these inorganic salts. Riboflavin in the concentration of 2mg/l generally alleviated the ill effect of calcium salts when these were unfavorable to pollens and also accelarated the stimulating effect of calcium salts when these were favorable to pollens.
