A search for microorganisms which possess the ability to produce fructose from sorbitol was carried out ; and a large number of strains of bacteria belonging to Pseudomonas boreopolis, Ps.fluorescens, Bacillus megaterium and B.subtilis were isolated from soil. It was found first that the B.megaterium group accumulated a large amount of fructose in cultural broth. A new name, B.fructosus, was given to one strain of genus Bacillus which was similar to B.megaterium.
