Cellulase Fraction-1,obtained by fractionation with ammonium sulfate, cellulose powder, DEAE-Sephadex A-26 and Amberlite XE-64 from the extract of a culture of Chaetomium globosum, was homogenous in the ultracentrifuge. The sedimentation constant S_<20,w> that was extrapolated to make an enzyme concentration zero was 3.9 S. the modlecular weight of this Fraction-1 was 15,800 by the Archibald method. The maximum ultraviolet spectrum of the fraction was 276 mμ and the minimum was 253 mμ.The optimum pH for the enzyme activity of the Fraction-1 was 4.0 in any method of measurement reducing sugar and viscosity and the optimum temperature was 40℃ in any method.The Fraction-1 acted upon carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) in a group of substrate viz. cotton fiber, filter paper, viscose rayon, CMC, methyl cellulose and cellobiose.The thermal inactivation on of the fraction at various pH and temperatures was examined. As a result, the thermal inactivation reaction was recognized as the first order reaction, and the constant rate reaction and the activation energy of the reaction against the Fraction-1 was obtained. The fraction was most stable at pH 6.0.
