Cell walls of 10 species of Streptomyces were hydrolyzed by acid and the contents of amino acids, hexosamines and hexoses were determined. All species contained glucosamine, muramic acid, alanine, glutamic acid, diaminopimelic acid and glycine as the major components, suggesting the presence of a common mucopeptide structure in the cell wall of Streptomyces.With regard to hexose, many differences were demonstrated. The components and the contents of hexose varied with species. Moreover, two groups could be distinguished from each other, relating to the sensitivit of cell wall to lysozyme. Lysozyme-resistant group had higher hexose contents than lyxozyme-sensitive group.Cell wall of S. reseochromogenes was selected as a representative of lysozyme-resistant group which was hydrolyzed by lysozyme after very prolonged incubation. From the hydrolysate three kinds of components were separated; a hexosamine complex (β-N-acetylglucosaminyl-N-acetylmuramic acid), a hexosamine-peptide complex and a hexosan-hexosamine-peptide complex. From the last complex the lytic enzyme of Flavobacterium sp. isolated from soil, liberated natural cell wall hexosan still containing a little hexosamine but no peptide.These results suggest the presence of a mucopeptide in S. roseochromogenes cell wall, which fits for the general principle of the bacterial mucopeptide structure, and to which a hexosan binds covalently through hexosamine. This hexosan seems to interfere with lysozyme action.
