The characteristics of the P.V.A. filter regarding the pressure drop of air flow and collection efficiency (<η>^^^-) of air-borne bacterial spores were studied previously. The effect of both the pore-size and thickness of the filter on the value of <η>^^^- and in addition, an interesting phenomenon of re-entrainment of bacterial spores into the air stream were discussed in the preceding paper.A correlation between the particle size (d_p in microns) of microbes and the value of <η>^^^- were studied experimentally. Three species of microorganisms, namely a bacterial spore (d_p=0.5 to 1 micron), yeast (d_p=5 microns) and a mould spore (d_p=7 to 8 microns) were employed in this paper, followed by the study on the effect of particle size on the collection mechanism.The experimental results are summarized as follows : 1) Regarding the larger particles, the diffusional effect on collection was not observed even in a lower region of nominal velocity, v_s less than 3 cm/sec.2) When the air velocity, v_s was in a range of 3 to 10 cm/sec (presumably interception controlling), the collection efficiency was enhanced proportionally with the increase of particle size.3) In the case of v_s exceeding 10cm/sec (inertial effect predominating) the collection efficiency became higher in value as the particle size increased.4) The re-entrainment phenomenon was observed most clearly. This is supported by the fact that there exists a maximum value of <η>^^^- in each experiment as shown in Fig. 1 and 2. The specific value of v_s at which the maximum value of <η>^^^- was realized was shifted to a lower value following the increase of the spore size handled.
