Pressure-drops of air flow and collection efficiency, η of air-borne bacterial spores through a plate filter made of poly-vinyl alcohol (60-80 μ in pore size and 5mm in thickness) were studied experimentally. This study was made to determine the usage of the P.V.A. filter as an air-sterilization-filter in fermentation industries.The value of the pressure-drop (ΔP in mm H_2O) was proportional to both the filter thickness (L mm) and the nominal air velocity (ν_s cm/sec) when the value of ν_s was less than about 100 cm/sec (see Fig. 2).The effect of ν_s on the value of η is shown in Fig. 3. The trend of the data in the figure is similar to that which has been found in previous studies by other workers regarding filters packed with glass fibers.In the lower region of ν_s (ν_s&glt;3 cm/sec) the bacterial spores are collected by the"diffusional" effect. Thus the value of η is inversely proportional to ν_s.In the higher region of ν_s, on the other hand, the "inertial" effect became predominant, resulting in that the higher velocity of ν_s was accompanied by the higher value of η. In the intermediate region (ν_s=3〜10 cm/sec) the value of η was nearly independent of the value of ν_s.
