The growth of seedlings of Quercus acutissima CARRUTH., Q.variabilis BL., and Q. serrata THUNB. was studied under different light intensities. The largest net production of Q. acutissima and Q. variabilis was found at about 70% relative light intensity (RLI). In Q. serrata, the net production at about 70% RLI was almost equal to that under daylight conditions. Under shading, however, the height/diameter ratio increased, and the seedlings became long and slender. The maximum leaf weight of Q. acutissima and Q. variabilis also was observed at about 70% RLI. The leaf weight of Q. serrata decreased as the RLI decreased. For each species, the distribution proportion of the net production into non-photosynthetic parts showed maximum values at about 70% RLI.
