Two-year-old clonal materials of Cryptomeria japonica were kept at two different pairs of alternating temperatures : higher, 30℃ for day(6.00a.m.to 6.00p.m.)and 25℃ for night(6.00p.m.to 6.00a.m.) and lower, 20℃ for day and 15℃ for night. After two weeks, they were sprayed with gibberellin(GA_3) solution (100 ppm)and subjected to alternating temperature conditions. Male flower buds were initiated only under the higher alternating temperatures within four weeks after the GA_3 treatment. One third of the female flower buds were initiated, irrespective of temperature condition. The other two thirds were initiated under the lower alternating temperature mainly within three weeks after the GA_3 treatment. The initiation of flower buds was affected by the temperature conditions prior to the GA treatment, they were earlier in the case of the higher alternating temperatures.
