The present paper deals with the results of our experiments on comparing the ability of cleaning Chamaecyparis obtusa seeds when using powder soap and synthetic washing agent (Soapless soap) solutions. In view of the results so far achieved, when the seeds are thrown into 0.1-0.25% solutions of powder soap or 0.025-0.25% soapless soap solutions and the sunken seeds later taken out, the seeds contain full grains of about 95 percent.There is no difference in the cleaning ability between the powder soap solution and the soapless soap one. A soapless soap solution, however, can select in lower consistency and is more easily soluble in water than a powder soap one. Therefore, it is profitable for us to use the former for seed cleaning.It seems that the seeds are sunken by the lower consistency of soapless soap than that in powder soap because of smaller surface tension and stronger wetting and penetrating action of the former as compared with those of the latter.For seed cleaning, we recommend that the surface active agents by which the cleaning can be done in lower consistency because of smaller surface tension be adopted.
