The investigations reported in the present work were carried out for changes of the degrees of light-sensitivity (represented by germination rate) of several light-favoured seeds with the lapse of time of imbibition. Consequently, the writers undertook to divide the light-favoured seeds into the following four grades based on the degrees of their light requirements for germination.1. "Nicotiana grade" : the most sensitive seeds in which the highest percentages of germination were obtained by a single short exposure to light (1000 Lux・1 min.). It was experimentally established that Silene Armeria L., Polygonum Reynoutria MAKINO, Oenothera Paviflora, Lysimachia mauritiana LAM., Rumex sp. and Alnus firma SIEB. et ZUCC. belonged to this grade.2. "Plantago grade" : seeds in which the considerable percentages of germination were obtained by a single exposure to light for a fairly long time (1000 Lux・1 hr.). Of this grade there are : Plantago major L. var. asiatica Dacne. and Oenothera Lamarckiana Ser.3. "Epilobium grade" : seeds in which the suitable percentages of germination were reached by a singleexposure to light for a long time (1000 Lux・24 hrs.). Of this grade we have : Epilobium cephalostigma HAUSK., Paulownia tomentosa KANITZ. and Leptandra sibirica NUTT.4. "Hypericum grade" : seeds in which the sufficient percentages of germination were secured by application of long-day photoperiod. Examples of such seeds are : Spiraea japonica L. fil., Rodgersia podophylla A. GRAY, Hypericum erectum THUNB., Houttuynia cordata THUNB. and Eragrostis ferruginea BEAUV.The writers are indebted to Mr. M.
