This work as a preliminary experiment of action spectrum was performed to investigation by using colored celophanes what portion of light affects seed germination.100 seeds were dissiminated over the surface of agar (2.0% aquous solution) in a 10 cm. petri dish. Two petri dishes were handled as one lot. The seeds received continuous irradiation for two weeks through colored celophanes (see Fig. 1 referring to the absorption spectrum of celophanes), then germination percentages were counted. As sources of light, a 30-watt Matsuda bulb was used. Light intensity was decided at 100 lux.The results are : In the case of KIRI (Paulownia tomentosa), YAMA-HANNOKI (Alnus tinctoria var. glabra) and YASHABUSI (Alnus firma), the optimum percentage was recorded in white, red and yellow lights, but no germination in green and blue lights and in darkness. Paulownia exhibited a higher germination rate in red and yellow lights than in white (Fig. 2-(1)) : AKAMATU (Pinus densiflora) and KUROMATU (Pinus Thunbergii) rates were good in white, red and yellow, but poor in green, bule and darkness (see Fig. 2-(2)) : in HINOKI (Chamaecyparis obtusa) and SAWARA (Chamaecyparus pisifera), the rates were higher in all the portions of light, but very low in darkness (see Fig. 2-(3)).The above-mentioned results led to the following conclusion.In all cases experimented, the lights of red and yellow promoted germination. In the case of Paulownia, it is considered that any portion of green and blue lights may inhibit germination, in view of the fact of a lower germination rate in white light than in red and yellow. These were, however, not confirmed by the present experiment. Therefore further studies are being performed using spectroscope.By the way it is worth to mention that the value of colored celophanes used for practical fields is so large as well proved in this kind of experiment because of their large size, cheapness, easiness of handling, though a method is very simple.
