Flocculated algal biomasses, including both a flocculated algal biomass and a flocculated mixed algal biomass, were prepared from an algal biomass consisting mainly of Chlorella vulgaris by PAC flocculation. An acrylate completely-mixed continuous-flow aeration reactor with an effective volume of 8.9 l was applied to experimental treatments of shochu-distillers' slops. It is clear that flocculated algal biomasses are good ersatz activated sludges at COD loadings of 0.07 to 0.10 kg/m^3・d, and a decrease in the SVI value of more than 500 ml/g to less than 150 ml/g through 10 to 20 d treatment would be evidence of the shifting of a flocculated algal biomass to an activated sludge. Biomass changes in the amounts of MLVSS, DNA, respiration and microflora were investigated during the shiftin of the flocculated algal biomasses to an activated sludge in the treatments. The amounts of DNA of the flocculated algal biomasses reached those of tap water activated sludge of 1.6-1.8%w/w 10 to 20 d after the start of the treatments, and were maintained after they were reached. This fact indicates a repletion of bacterial amounts in the flocculated algal biomasses, and thus the amount of DNA in flocculated algal biomasses is an important index of the shift to an activated sludge.
