Modified tower-trickling filters, including a laboratory-scale rick system, were employed for experimental treatments of shochu distiller's slops with investigation of COD removal and biofilm microflora, as well as the preparation of an artificial biofilm. The modified tower-trickling filters A and B and the laboratory-scale rick system consisted of filter beds of polyvinyl chloride plates, of the same plates covered with sheets of hard nylon-towelling, and of hemp palm ropes, respectively, as the filter medium. Filter A was employed for treatment at a downflow time of 5 min with COD removal of 50-60%. These COD removal percentages were judged to be within the range of COD removal by microorganisms in the diluted slops samples. In the rick system and filter B, COD removal of 70% was reached at a downflow time of approximately 20 min, 2 days after the start of treatment. It took 10 days to obtain a COD removal of 80-90% by the natural formation of a biofilm on the filter media. An artificial biofilm was prepared by the immobilization of the 3 main isolates from activated algal biomass in calcium alginate gel on the filter media. Preparation of the artificial biofilm advanced the rise in the COD removal curve by 2 days for filter A and by half a day for the filter B. Microflorae of the biofilms were investigated in the treatment of diluted shochu distiller's slops in the modified tower-trickling filters. Alcaligenes sp., Enterobacter sp., Flavobacteria and Pseudomonas sp. were found to be the main constituents of the biofilm microflora in both filters A and B. However, although Alcaligenes sp., Enterobacter sp. and Pseudomonas sp. were the main biofilm microflora constituents in the upper part of filter B, they were isolated at reduced frequencies in the lower part. The reduced isolation frequencies were judged to correspond to the COD concentration of diluted down flowing slops, and here COD removal of 80-90% was thought to be achieved.
