Strain No. 45 capable of growing heavily at the expense of formaldehyde as a sole carbon source was selected from soil in Hiroshima, using the enrichment culture method. This strain could grown on formaldehyde supplied in the form of vapour, but could not grow when it was added to the medium directly. Ammonium nitrate and vitamins enhanced the growth of strain No. 45 about 20%, respectively. The growth was, however, inhibited completely by Ni^<2+>, Hg^<2+>, and Ag^+ ions at concentrations of 10^<-4>M.Strain No. 45 could not utilize other kinds of aldehyde, other than formaldehyde, but grew abundantly on methanol, succinic acid, and peptone. Washed cells grown on formaldehyde and methanol incorporated formaldehyde in the reaction mixture, and the critical concentration of formaldehyde added to the cells grown on formaldehyde was between 100 and 250μg/ml. Also, washed cells grown on ethanol, glycerol, or succinic acid incorporated formaldehyde in the reaction mixture more slowly at lower concentration of formaldehyde than washed cells grown on formaldehyde.
