The disease is characterized by hyperplastic scabs on leaves,stems, and pods. On the leaves: The scab circular to irregular in ape, usually more or less elevated on the upper surface, sometimes coalescent, minute to about 4 mm. in diameter, frequently visible on both surfaces of the leaf, commonly "vinaceous buff", often fading to "pale drab gray". On the stem: Minute spot to elliptical elongate scab of 1 cm. or more in length, up to 2 cm. long when confluent, generally "vinaceous buff" in color, sometimes with reddish brown margin. On the pods: In general, young scabs red to "Kaiser brown", mature ones dark-olive to black in color, lighter in the center, with reddish brown margins.
