Adv. Exerc. Sports Physiol., Vol.7, No.2 pp53-58, 2001. We attempted to delineate and assess the dynamic changes in the regional distribution of myocardial glucose utilization during physical exercise using three-dimensional positrin emission tomography (3D-PET) with F-labelled fluorodeoxy-glucose (FDG) in human. Twelve healthy male colunteers were studied. Six were assigned to a running group (E) and the other 6 to control group (C). Group E performed a running-exercise on a flat surface for 35 minutes, while group C sat relaxed on a chair a quiet roon\m. After a PET scan, the regions of interst (ROIs) were set, covering the left and right ventricular wall (LV, RV), left and right atrial wall (LA, T|RA)., ventricular and atrial septum (VS, AS), and the rest of the heart. The standardized uptake ratio (SUR), which evaluates FDG uptale per unit volume of the whole heart region, exhibited higher values in group E in comparison with group C (E: 9.04±0.82, C: 6.22±0.87, [mean±SE], p<0.05). SURs in LV and RV were higher in group E than in C (LV. E: 2.42±0.29, C: 1.57±0.18, RV. E: 1.43±0.14, C: 0.82±0.12, respecively p<0.05), regardless of the fact that there was no difference between E and C regarding the SUR values in LA, TA, VS, and AS. Our results suggested that the ventricular free walls of both right and left were more responsible than the atrial or the septal myocardium for the increased work force exerted on the heart induced by a moderate degree of exercise.
