Inverse TMR Effect in a Granular Fe_3O_4/CrO_2 System near the Percolation Threshold

Magneto-resistance (MR) ratios were measured for (Fe_3O_4)_<1-x>(CrO_2)_x granular systems between 77 K and 300 K, where x is the volume fraction of CrO_2 in the measured sample. Since the spin polarization of conduction electrons is -100% in Fe_3O_4 and 100% in CrO_2, the present granular junctions were expected to show inverse tunneling magneto-resistance (TMR) effects. In the range 0 ≤ x ≤ 1, MR behaviors were characterized by low-resistive CrO_2/I/CrO_2 junctions, where "I" denotes some insulating barrier. For x ≤ 0.2, the magnetic conduction behaviors were dominated by the presence of high-resistive Fe_3O_4/I/Fe_3O_4 junctions. The inverse TMR effect only appeared at x=0.3 near the percolation threshold x_c of CrO_2/I/CrO_2 paths, where the number of CrO_2 grains completely enclosed by Fe_3O_4 grains became maximum. An averaging effect on the coercive force H_c caused by randomly magnetic anisotropy was also observed for the present granular system.
