Production of Dihydroxyacetone by Contiuous Cultivation of Acetobacter suboxydans : Studies on Aerobic Fermentation (VII)

The practical continuous production of dihydroxyacetone (DHA) from glycerol by Acetobactor suboxydans ATCC 621 has been investigated. Taking into account the characteristics of the batch culture, the cultivation was carried out with the three-vessel system, the first vessel for propagation of cells, the second vessel for oxidative reaction, and the last vessel for completion of the reaction. Consequently, a steady state in the last vessel could be maintained at a DHA level of 128 mg/ml, 87% conversion yeild, over 100 hr at a dilution rate of 0.10 hr^<-1>. Using a dilution rate of 0.14 hr<-1>, a four-vessel system was required to attain such a high conversion yield.
