Strains of Hansenula miso IFO 0146 with mutations for foam production were isolated by treatment with N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine, and then staining with aniline blue. Strain W1 grew better and produced less foam than the parent strain in both ethanol medium and glucose medium. The aniline blue method seems useful for isolating mutants on the basis on changes in cell surface structure.
