Utilization of Phthalic Acid and Iso- and Tere-phthalic Acids by Soil Bacteria

Seven strains were isolated as organisms capable of growing in medium containing phthalic, isophthalic or terephthalic acid as the sole source of carbon. Alcaligenes P3 and P12 and Corynebacterium P49 were which isolated using phthalic acid medium, grew well on phthalic acid and only strain P3 showed also good growth on terephthalic acid.Arthrobacter IP3 and Corymebacterium IP4 and IP5 which were isolated, using isophthalic acid medium, grew well on isophthalic acid and only strain IP3 showed also good growth on terephthalic acid although strain IP4 gave slight growth on phthalic acid. Arthrobacter TP2 which was isolated using terephthalic acid medium, grew well on terephthalic acid as well as on isophthalic acid. No strain which grew well on all the three dicarboxylic bezene compounds was isolated. The products from phthlic acid by Corynebacterium IP4 were identified as 3-hydroxyphthalic acid and protocatechuic acid, respectively. New metabolic pathway of phthalic acid was proposed.
