Efficient Conversion of L-Sorbosone to 2-Keto-L-Gulonic Acid by Acetobacter liquefaciens Strains

Microbial conversion activity of L-sorbosone to 2-keto-L-gulonic acid (2KGA) was compared among the strains belonging to the genus Gluconobacter and their relatives, Acetobacter liquefaciens. A. liquefacients IFO 12257 and IFO 12258 (formerly G. melanogenus), and IFO 12388 (formerly G. liquefaciens) were found to have the highest activity among the strains tested; they converted L-sorbosone to 2KGA almost stoichiometrically. The dehydrogenase activity was mainly found in the membrane fraction.
