A laboratory isolate of Citrobacter freundii immobilized in k-carrageenan was used for the bioconversion of gallic acid into pyrogallol. In batch fermentation, 20% (w/v) bead concentration produced maximum pyrogallol (5.53 g/l) from 10 g/l of gallic acid. In repeated batch fermentation, the pyrogallol concentration increased until the third cycle (6.8 g/l) and remained steady thereafter. Continuous fermentation was performed using a packed column bioreactor. The maximum production of 7.3 g/l (98.5% conversion) was obtained at the flow rate of 0.5 ml/min.
