Ethanol production from lactose was studied using an adapted initial inoculum of Kluyveromyces fragilis NRRL 665 in monoculture and coculture with Zymomonas mobilis NRRL B 4286. The monoculture of adapted K. fragilis produced more ethanol than the non-adapted cultures. K. fragilis produced 52.98g/l ethanol in monoculture, and with Z. mobilis in coculture produced 61.29g/l ethanol from 250g/l lactose medium. The percentage of theoretical yield was found to be higher in coculture than in monoculture. With increasing substrate concentration from 100g/l to 250g/l, the parameters related to growth and sugar uptake were affected in both cases.
