A control strategy for the addition of substrate in fed-batch glutamic acid fermentation has been developed using the exit gas analysis method. During the period of glutamate excretion a linear relationship existed between oxygen uptake rate and substrate consumption rate. Based on this relationship, on-line control of substrate feeding was carried out by measuring the oxygen uptake rate. It was possible to feed substrate at approximately the same rate at which it was utilized, thereby maintaining a constant substrate level. Consequently, this system resulted in a more controlled environment together with an improved productivity compared with a conventional fed-batch system.
